 DRI moved the CEFA webservers to a new ip address today. This should have minimal impact on users, but some users may initially be unable to load the web page (which is why this notice is going out as email as well). Any difficulty resolving the website should fix itself as soon as your DNS cache refreshes. If you are having difficulty connecting to the cefa site you can also try flushing your DNS cache and/or (if you are a windows user) simply rebooting. Please contact us if you have problems connecting to the CANSAC web pages in the next few days.
2010/03/31:
 You will notice username and password boxes in the upper right corner of the main and Air Quality CANSAC products pages. We now have a user preference system in place that users can use to hide products they rarely or never view. Please email or call Hauss Reinbold if you want a username and password, and we will create an account for you and call you with the details. To use the feature, just log in and click settings, and then select the products you want displayed when you view the page. Once logged in you can also mouse-over a product and click the hide button that pops up if you want to do it that way. We are keeping the service pretty locked down for now, creating usernames and passwords on demand for CANSAC users/members. Please let us know what you think of the new feature, or if you have suggestions or requests associated with it.

 While performing some experimental MM5 runs in between operational runs yesterday and today we inadvertently overwrote the file that tells the webpage which run is the most recent, therefore the webpage was stuck on the 2008080600 run as the lastest run, even though the operational model was running smoothly and the images were updating to the webserver on time. The images of runs past 2008080600 were accessible from the archives page, but the user would not have known this from looking at the main forecast page. The issue has been corrected and I am adding this particular possibility to my error checking script so that we catch this quicker next time. We know this is a busy season for a lot our users and we apologize for the inconvenience. While we will do our best to keep on top of future web site forecast disruptions, if a run does not appear on the site when it should and we do not post a notice about it before or immediately after the scheduled run, users are encouraged to send queries about the disruption shortly thereafter using the CANSAC feedback form.

Unfortunately, the good people in Greenwich do not change their clocks accordingly, so the MM5 will appear to finish an hour later than normal until we wind our clocks back again in the fall.  We are now running 00z and 12z CANSAC MM5 forecasts on a backup server here at DRI. These backup runs will run a little bit later than normal, due to backup server and network limitations, with images appearing on the website around 3:30 am/pm PDT.
2007/04/03:
 We finally have the MM5 model running and products being produced, however this is being done on a temporarily borrowed server from another research group. Their generosity is greatly appreciated during this stressful time. This option could cease to exist at any time should that research group need their server for their own projects. In the meantime, SGI is still trying to identify why their/our machines are unable to properly run the MM5 model.
2007/04/02:
 SGI engineers are continuing to test and try to identify the problem on our Cansac server. We have been testing the forecast model on several alternative servers and are hopeful that we will be running a coarse-level backup system by tomorrow.

 We continue to work the problem with SGI. We are optimistic that we will have the MM5 running again soon either on the existing server or a back-up machine. We will post another update tomorrow on both of those options.

 We have opened a case with SGI and are working with them to resolve the problem. Even so, it does not look like we will get the MM5 back by tonight or tomorrow morning. Solving this problem remains our highest priority. We will continue with daily updates until the problem is solved.

 We are still working to resolve the problem with the MM5 runs. In addition, the institute is moving the server to a new server room and we will likely not be able to run the MM5 tonight or tomorrow morning. It is our highest priority to get the CANSAC MM5 running smoothly again as soon as possible.

 We are once again experiencing MM5 data corruption during the run. We are working with all haste to resolve it. We will post here with an update once we have pin-pointed the problem.

 We are moving the CANSAC post-processing server to a newer institute server room this afternoon. We anticipate a smooth transition that will be finished before this evening's run. If that is not the case we will let you know before tonight's run begins.

 Our web servers will be down for about 10 minutes today between 4 and 5 pm as they are moved to a new server room. We anticipate the move to go smoothly.

 A major hardware crash occurred on the post-processing workstation over the weekend. We are working on getting it repaired. In the meantime, we are creating a backup system to help mitigate future problems like this. We hope to have runs begin again on Wednesday.

 Just a reminder, tomorrow neither the MM5 server or the web server will have power from 7am to 11am due to a scheduled power outage here at DRI. This means tomorrow's 12z run will not happen. We believe the evening 00z will proceed as normal once power is back on.

 DRI will undergo scheduled electrical maintenance from 6-7 am tomorrow morning. We expect the model to run tomorrow morning, if perhaps a little late. In addition we will be performing minor hardware and software maintenance on the CANSAC server tomorrow afternoon, but do not expect it to impact the evening run. Furthermore, DRI will be under-going another scheduled power outage for most of Friday (20061110) morning which will prohibit the 12z run for that morning. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to minimize it as much as possible.

 Due to a technical problem in the post-processing workstation the cansac products did not update for the runs 2006101400 and 2006101412. The problem has been resolved and the cansac web page will update as scheduled. The above mentioned runs will be provided from the archive link. Thank you for your patience.
2006/10/09:
 Recent improvements to the CANSAC system are very positive. The upgrade that took place a few weeks ago (and caused us all much grief) has yielded excellent results. MM5 run-times are now around one hour and 35 minutes. This is from a combination of going from 32 to 48 processors, and an updated mm5 version 3.7. All post-processing has been moved from the main CANSAC system to a dedicated workstation. This is allowing the meteograms, verification, NFDRS and Bluesky to be completed in about 2 hours following model run completion (maybe a bit longer depending upon the amount of Bluesky input).

 We believe we have finished smoothing out the wrinkles that resulted from the hardware upgrade and that the CANSAC MM5 server is once again operating as normal.

 As of this evening, NFDRS forecasts are working again but the model run times are still unstable due to unknown memory management issue(s) which we will continue to work on.

 After the very unfortunate system problems, the system is back online, seems to be stable and we believe in mostly good shape. We are working on the few remaining glitches (repairing some corrupted file(s) affecting NFRDS calculations, memory management, and MM5 run timing).

 We have rebuilt some system files over the weekend. This means we could see a successful MM5 run and product creation as early as this evening. We will begin running the MM5 again tonight and checking it for problems. We will let you know when we feel the machine is fully operational again and the upgrade is finished.

 System file rebuilding is still failing. SGI engineers continue to look at log files and provide checking and testing guidance, but this is a very nasty problem. Earliest MM5 will be up is Wednesday.

 As if the situation was not bad enough already, a system crash occurred (of yet unknown cause) that rendered two RAID disks offline. The RAID is now in critical condition. Rebuilding from one hot spare drive and then another rebuild will require 13 hours total time. No MM5 products will be produced on Thursday. Next likely opportunity for a normal MM5 run will be Friday evening. (We now sympathize with NASA and numerous technical glitches causing launch delays).
2006/09/06:
 The overnight repair of the CANSAC filesystem appears to be positive; so now the corrupted executables are being recompiled this evening. If this effort is successful, Thursday morning's run may take place per normal. The next update will be Thursday.

 Work continues on resolving and repairing the CANSAC problems following last week's hardware upgrade. During tonight the entire 2.7 terabyte file system will be rebuilt and examined Wed morning. If this work and test is successful, the next normal MM5 run will be Wed evening.

 DRI is currently experiencing site-wide power-failure today due to a downed powerline. The CANSAC MM5 and network services are on backup power that we expect will last longer than the power outage (in other words, for the moment we expect the MM5 to run as normal tonight and tomorrow). However, if the power outage continues longer than expected, there may be some impact in tonight or this weekend's MM5 runs. We will keep you updated on the situation.

 A few product changes to mention today. First, the cross-section maps have had existing wind display replaced with barbed horizontal wind vectors. Second, cumulative rainfall scale bug has been fixed in meteograms. Third, text fonts on all label bars should be larger.

First, Verification products were down as of April 1st and as of today the problem has been fixed and verification product posting should resume as normal. Second, a bug in the precipitation scale and labeling of the hourly precipitation in the meteograms that occurred at low precipitation values has been fixed.

Cross-section maps have been added for several cities in California on the Air Quality Page. 3k ft-surface temp difference maps have been divided into quadrants and the temperature scale for those maps has been changed to Fahrenheit.  The CANSAC MM5 server will undergo a software upgrade starting Monday, February 20. The upgrade will begin after the morning (2006022012) run. Work will proceed as quickly as possible but users should not expect the 2006022100, 2006022112, or 2006022200 runs at all. We hope to have everything operational by Wednesday, the 22nd (for the 12z run) but that will depend on how smoothly the upgrade proceeds. We will keep users updated about the progess of the upgrade and when users can expect to see runs again.
2006/01/25:
 We are experiencing problems with new file upload software here at the institute. These problems caused a delay in the posting of the Jan 25 MM5 runs. The problem has been fixed, but the implementation of the new upload software is not yet complete and users should be aware that while we will try to avoid further disruption, the possibility of further disruptions still exists while we work out the bugs with the new software. The new software and upload setup will allow for faster image uploads from the CANSAC MM5 server to the web server.

 We are expanding the length of the Domain 3 (4 km) forecasts to 60 hours. These should begin tonight, or tomorrow morning (assuming all goes well).

 Due to a power outage here at the institute yesterday, the CANSAC MM5 server was unable to upload finished products to the website until today. That problem is now fixed. We have uploaded the images from yesterday and this morning and runs should now proceed as normal.

 Another massive DRI power failure followed by a network failure stalled this morning's run. We are attempting to run the model before this evening's run. Regardless, this evening's run should not be affected.

 A massive DRI network slowdown prevented finished CANSAC products from being uploaded to the web site for both the 2005082500 and 2005082512 model runs. The network situation has only recently been fixed and the data from both model runs will be up on the website shortly.
2005/06/26:
 The 12z run for the 26th did not finish again due to intialization errors. We are working on a solution.
2005/06/25:
 There was a problem getting the initialization data this morning. The 2005062512 run will not finish. The 2005062600 run should run as expected.
2005/06/21:
 The MM5 2005062000 run did not finish yesterday due to an error in getting the model initialization data. We are working with our IT staff to minimize such data disruption. This should not affect either this morning's or this evening's run.
2005/05/05:
 The MM5 will likely not run this evening as the promised hardware upgrades will be installed this afternoon. MM5 runs will resume as normal once upgrades are completed.
2005/03/01:
 Starting with the 2005030200 MM5 run, the MM5 forecast products will be available as the products are completed (for instance, you will be able to see the 3-hour forecast well before the model finishes running). Red forecast hours indicate that the model has not completed those forecasts yet.
2005/02/17:
 The 2005021712 MM5 run will not be available. A network outage on campus prevented the model from getting the eta intialization data needed for the model run. This was an isolated incident and the 2005021800 model run should proceed as normal this evening.
